Top tier paint protection lines have made heat activated self healing standard across their gloss and satin ranges. A shop still selling it as a premium add on is telling you how old their stock is.
Paint protection film is a clear urethane layer laid over the paint to take the damage that the paint would otherwise take: stone chips on the leading edges, swirl from washing, bug etch on the nose. Self healing means the top coat of that film is formulated to relax back to flat when it gets warm, so the light scratches that used to live in your clear coat now live in a layer that closes them up in the sun or under a heat gun.
The change worth knowing about is that this is no longer a feature you shop for. Across the current gloss and satin ranges from the major film houses, heat activated self healing top coats are the baseline specification rather than the flagship line. That reframes the conversation you should be having with an installer.
So when a shop presents self healing as a paid upgrade over their standard film, there are only two explanations. Either they are quoting from stock that has been sitting on the shelf through a product generation, or they are selling you the current product twice. Neither is a reason to walk out, but both are a reason to ask what the film is, what the manufacturer calls that line, and when the roll was made.
The honest variables left are coverage, edges and warranty terms. Full front against full body changes the price far more than the film brand does. Wrapped edges age better than cut edges but take longer and cost more, and a shop that wraps edges will tell you so before you ask. Warranty length comes from the manufacturer, not the installer, and the installer's own labour guarantee is a separate promise you should hear stated out loud.
Longevity in normal use runs in years, not months, and it depends more on sun exposure and wash habits than on which of the top lines went on the car. A film that has been polished with an aggressive compound by someone who thought they were polishing paint will look older than its age. Ask how the shop expects the car to be maintained, and whether they will do that maintenance.
